More Than 5 Times A Day

I see the flashing red lights,
reliving each ride in the back
of the ambulance watching
you with your patients – your gentle
touch, soft demeanor, compassion –
as you tried to save their lives.

More than 5 times a day
I am struck by the thought that I
had never seen that side of you,
had never given you the chance,
convinced you were like all the others
giving you no other choice but to
leave.

More than 5 times a day
I look at your photograph
and touch your smooth skin, trying
to draw back your warmth to me, trying
to find a way to say I am sorry, trying
to find a way to make things happen
differently.

  1. We all have regrets and most of us learn to live with them and not dwell on them. You have penned a beautiful description of perhaps the greatest regret of all.
